So, /lit/, what is the best science fiction novel ever written?

Pic related is my answer, as long as it's taken as one book along with The Fall of Hyperion. Other prime contenders include Dune, Foundation, the Commonwealth Saga, Startide Rising and Slaughterhouse Five. Your considered opinions?

I LOVED this series. The settings were so fantastic. I think my favorite part was when Raul passed through the portal and fell for hours in the gas giant planet, chancing upon zeppelins and looking at weather that could engulf whole planets.
Hyperion general.

What does /lit/ think of Hyperion?

It was recommended to me by a friend.

Worth buying? Or should I just take it out at the library when I get home next month?

So what is /lit/'s opinion of the Hyperion Cantos? Hyperion and Fall of Hyperion are two of my most favorite science fiction books. However, I felt that Endymion and Rise of Endymion were poor sequels.

Ok /lit/ I have a $30 gift card for Borders, and I need your help. I've already decided on getting the third book in the Prince of Nothing series and Hyperion, but the question for the last book is either Fall of Hyperion or Dune Messiah. I liked Dune a lot, but I heard Dune Messiah isn't as good. I've also heard many great things about Hyperion. I'll probably get both eventually, but I want to know what you think I should get now.

Yeah that seems to be the general consensus from what I've read about them. That they're an easy, quick and fun read that doesn't require much thought and are full of puns.

I've been meaning to read Hyperion. How is that?

I started reading the Hyperion books because Yuki Nagato from Haruhi was reading them. I have to say that the first two books were excellent science-fiction while the Endymion series just shat all over it.
