where to get short story ideas?

Hey /lit/ I apologize in advance if this is not the appropriate place to post this, but halloween has reminded me of a book I read in elementary school but I can not find it.

I believe it was called "the thing" or something like that, but all the books called that are far too long for it to be the book I read in elementary school.

From what I remember, it is a book about a man in a cabin in the wood whom gets spooked and attacked by some sort of blob.

I know this isn't very descriptive but it's kind of a last ditch effort to see if I can find it, thanks.
