Pic was great for civil war military strategy. Not as relevant today since military technology has evolved so fast but there were some incredible tacticians on both sides. Rise and Fall of The third Reich was great to see how Hitler got as far as he did with modern tech

I’m on volume 3 of pic related. I believe this is the definitive resource. It is so fucking good I can’t put it down. 3,000 pages detailing every major battle and political action, written by a Mississippian 100 years later

If I’m bored of a book I’ll read the rest of it high. I read The Golden Bowl high and it made it so much fun.

I love well written history but nonfiction is riddled with dry boring writing.

Last year I read The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich and now I’m halfway through Shelby Foote’s The Civil War: A Narrative.

Any other sprawling masterpieces about maybe WWI, the Roman Empire, or anything that would blow my mind like these books?

I’m also a big fan of the biographer Henri Troyat but his works are limited to Russian History
