This book really got to me. Not only are the 'regular' parts of Hadrian's (fictional) memoirs fantastic, but the parts about Antinous had me actually tearing up in the middle of the park as I read their conclusion. I couldn't shake the feeling of profound sadness for my whole walk home. I wonder what you other anons got from it? Did it affect you the same way?

Finally finished this tonight. I had previously set it aside twice but on the third attempt it seemed to transform into something greater and from then on I was set to finish it. I think there is something in this book for all of /lit/ - growing up, coming to terms with death and grief, hating the Jews, and finally letting go of the fantasy that we control the destiny of others. The style was a bit dry (it is translated from the french which I assume is even more eloquent) but this was only really irritating during the Dacian campaign, the low point of the entire book imo. I am currently reading the notes at the end from Yourcenar and enjoying how pretentious and french they are.

Has anyone else read it? I'd enjoy your thoughts.
