They got to about half a mile in tanks before they had to turn away.

I guess that the use of atomics by Paul really drives home just how powerful certain taboos were in Dune's society. The Harkonnen seemingly treated the matter of House Atreides's atomics by ignoring it. Even when every High (and probably most of the minor ones) Houses of Landsraad have the ability to mantain and manufacture nuclear weapons and even with the cut throat politics of the Imperial society, the taboo holds.
