personally i feel like manga and comics fall under visual art more than literature. same goes with television and film. these all share aspects of literature but the main point of them having the visual aspect is because (if it's really good) there is something that can only be portrayed through that medium.
an example of a comic that could personify this could be art spiegelman's maus. or a manga could be hideo yamamoto's homunculus. both of these probably could have been told through pure written form sure, but the artists really brought something out of these worlds they perhaps could not otherwise have been able to.
anyway if you're wanting to read any manga that resemble lit in any way stay away from that shounen shit and focus more on seinen. you'll have to shovel through piles of shit to find the gems but they are definitely there.
