After writing Mannfred, Byron was accused of plagiarizing Goethe's Faust. Goethe, in retaliation for alleged plagiarism, accused Byron of hypochondria. In response, Byron claimed that he never read Fast, which I think was a lie.

Nietzsche on Mannfred and Faust:
"I must be profoundly related to Byron's Mannfed: all these abysses found in myself; at the age of thirteen, I was ripe for this work. I have no word, only a glance for those who dare pronounce the word "Faust" in the presence of Mannfred. The Germans are incapable of any notion of greatness.
