Not necessarily dark and misanthropic, but if you want to get back to the origins of pessimistic philosophy, Schopenhauer is your guy.

What is the literary equivalent of Lars von Trier's films?

The question is open to interpretation but I'll list some characteristics of his films that I'm interested in.

>takes an adversarial/hostile stance toward its audience
>very depressing, punishes its characters
>protagonist is a woman who doesn't fit the stereotypical "heroine"
>technically inventive and/or has self-imposed technical constraints

Well-written should go without saying.
