For what it's worth, we know exactly how Dosto wanted Sonya to look because illustrations for that book were done in his time, with his approval. This is the only good one of Sonya, it's when she comes in to her parent's flat to see her father lying on the brink of death. His correspondence with the illustrator is held in Russian but has never been translated. The gist, for Sonya, is 'pretty but not beautiful, gaunt, and youthful'
