The mutation happened around the middle of the 20th century and only became worse and worse from there. Leftism gradually became absorbed by the ruling political class as they came to realize that Leftist positions could be used to manage the sociological aspects of a culture, while Right-wing positions could be used to manage and exert economic influence and power in a culture.

So the Leftists stopped becoming interested in overthrowing material constructions--which is a retarded position anyway imo, because history has proven over and over again that simply getting rid of a material structure you don't like does nothing to solve the underlying problems that corrupted it in the first place--and focused more on image and identity.

You can track this train of thought in the evolution of postmodernism and books like Society of the Spectacle, where Left-wing thinkers began to concentrate more and more not on what they had to do, but how they had to look in order to compete and perhaps one day overthrow the current system.

Unfortunately, all that really happened was those positions--while metaphysically interesting, even fascinating in their documentation of modern social phenomena--wilted as they became watered down for the masses. And instead of most people viewing the system they lived in as one large structure that was only projecting an image of power instead of actually being capable of generating it, therefore making it absolutely fallible and in need of correction, they became tethered to the political and social talking points that the structure handed out to them as consolation prizes, and dug ideological trenches over them.

And now we're here in the present, where popular Leftists and Right-wingers alike have totally abandoned any genuine ideological conceptions of reality in order to play-act with each other for social/legacy-media brownie points.

It's disgusting, but it won't last, and I predict within the next decade or so these people will be regarded as nothing more than children and disposed of.
