Yes and no. I grew up in a midwestern farm town. To me, THAT was isolated, confined, and severely limited my intellectual growth. In LA, I feel I have local resources for any interest I wish to pursue, which is very important and very freeing to me. But I have to work so hard to afford it that most of my time and energy is taken from me before I can get to the fun stuff.

Plus these days I have all the black people -- homeless and not -- asking me for money every god damn time I walk around the block for coffee.

Maybe in a perfect utopia world. Pretty much everything in the modern world requires connections for a variety of reasons. Exposure, funding, etc. If you're doing stuff that can make those connections worried about your actions blowing back on them they'll cut ties with you. This is why autistic shrieking feminists can almost get a man who landed a drone on a comet kicked out of the scientific community over his shirt. I suspect this is why all those studies that start poking holes in political correctness get pulled. Doesn't even have anything to do with whether or not they're valid. It's just that it's easier to pull the plug and have a bunch of people with no backing be upset, than to leave it in and have a bunch of journalists make clickbait headlines over it. As shit gets pushed further left in academia more topics become less safe to talk about and less people want to back them.

The natural side-effect is it's legitimizing the claims that fringed groups make that "X-Group controls Y-thing"

What happened, lads? Why is everything becoming so mediocre?
Is it the times? or am I paranoid. Everywhere I look I see pseudo-intellectuals. I am no intellectual either, but I don't paint this gloomy and dreary image of a suffering artist. I keep myself to myself. My poems for just when I need to read them or send them.
But others? They write a couple of free verse poems and get praise from the normies and it gets me mad! Why are they enjoying their mediocrity so much! What do they get out of it.
It's just "bruv I got drunk on voddies", "bruv check this sick unilad wrow",
or when I find an artist circle it's all
"oh the dreary winter!", "oh my cliche cliche", "lmao check this artistry coat i got a drug store" and I have to end all contact.

Why?

What is going on, lads??? This is getting unbearable.

If you got the humor you wouldn't be asking. Seems to me like you didn't laugh and you are now insecurely asking if there are jokes in the first Chapter or not.

Yes, you are supposed to laugh.

I loved my senior year teacher
She was god tier. She hated Young Adult fiction and had this bookshelf full of shit like Dostoyevky, Wolfe, Satre, Kurt Vonnegut, Hesse, Jünger etc

She would go on little rants about shit like tattoos, pop music, controversial shit. She would have us solve disputes through a debate.

.....I miss her lads. She's what got me into literature

This was quite a well-written post anon, goodjob.

Unfortunately you seem to be under the false impression that the core ideas of camus have any merit or depth at all. His entire 'philosophy' just boils down to 'do what makes you happy'. No matter how long Camus had to ruminate on Tolstoy, his core ideas would still be trash..

Kids can come to school an hour early or stay an hour later and spend the hour reading books under the supervision of a teacher. This is purely optional, but if they commit to the program they get some sort of reward. I don't know what, whatever teenagers like these days that's not illegal.

The only books that aren't allowed are assigned textbooks or fiction for other classes - it has to be recreational. The point is to expose kids to recreational reading because it correlates with academic success in general.

I used to tutor kids with learning disabilities in high school and we did this, albeit for only 15 mins a day. Oh and we didn't reward the kids with anything lol, they didn't seem to enjoy it much.

My university library has almost all the books I could ever want. It's especially useful for out of print books. I don't really understand the motivation for keeping all this rare and obscure fiction, it's clear that the books are rarely read. Is it for the sake of knowledge alone or do lit majors use them?
