Narcissism is a self-love that enables one to act over and above pressures of conformity or morality. Narcissism is an image-love that holds the individual to impossibly high standards. Narcissism builds empires, fuels the pursuit of arts and science.

The problem is not that we are all narcissists but that developments in scientific and political thought have stripped us of our capacity for narcissism. We are not unique, we do not have free will, our achievements are the work of various predetermined socio-economic-biological factors. We are mere manifestations of chance, nodes on a graph which is coming more and more to look like the new self of our collective subjectivity.

We have lost our very souls, maybe for good, maybe for the better. Humanity is undergoing a process of great change. The experiment with individualism has run its course. The process is torturous for individuals. It's not narcissism, but hedonism, a concern with all things anaesthetic that drives us now, anything to block out the slow realization of personal-apocalypse.

The generation which follows us will be better adapted to this new reality. They will live through the collective subjectivity, the parameters of the human graph will become the new ground for spiritual work. The human subjectivity will achieve new heights we cannot possibly comprehend or imagine. But it means our death and non-understanding.
