I understand your pain but it's less an issue of rural life and more an issue of American life outside the handful of megalopolis cultural seats that run everything.
I've lived in the rural, suburban, and urban south, each one for years, and they're all dogshit in ways more similar than different. I guarantee you that none of the people calling you soulless have ever walked into a grocery store in a county where that's the single largest structure and seen the kinds of walking husks that inhabit it, each on the verge of collapsing from an age-, obesity-, or meth-induced heart attack. These places are miserable.
