What are the best books to help me appreciate art? I've always felt that I didn't fully understand art and that there were some layers beneath it that I'm missing. Do I have to learn about the history of art, and if so, do you guys have any recommendations?

/lit/ why don't people like to think? I mean really critically think about things? I was on facebook and I was looking at the fan pages of two shows I really like True Detective and Black Mirror. I consider these shows to not only be very well done in terms of writing, acting, and directing, but also to be extremely thought provoking and philosophical, yet the number of people who 'like' those pages is abysmal compared to random, thought-devoid MTV schlock and blockbusters.

In fact, I was hard pressed to find any shows at all that had less 'likes' than those. Now you might disagree with me on the merit of those shows, but the trend I notice is that the public at large seems to recoil from thinking.

This isn't new to me. At first it used to enrage me. I would rant and rail. But now it just kind of confuses and saddens me. Maybe its the antidepressants.

I know it's not strictly /lit/ related, but I didn't know who better to ask. And I think you'll agree, its not just television, but books as well. You know, Twilight, Harry Potter, 50 shades, etc.

“I could not become anything; neither good nor bad; neither a scoundrel nor an honest man; neither a hero nor an insect. And now I am eking out my days in my corner, taunting myself with the bitter and entirely useless consolation that an intelligent man cannot seriously become anything, that only a fool can become something.”
