Yes you are right, i relate to this a lot
It didn't matter whether i took care of myself or how attractive i was, deep down i really felt like a sad socially awkward loser and that's what i was.
For a while i could't cope with it having lost those precious years that would never come back i felt quite desperate having accomplished nothing and even more lonely than i already was.
Ironically Aku no hana helped me so much, the ending especially, it actually gave me hope, i managed to somewhat overcome those feelings, if you have read it perhaps you know what i mean.
Things aren't much better now but i believe that getting over some wasted years of one's youth was ultimately part of the message as oshimi himself was definitely guilty of this
