Tried to read this twice and didn't finish, guess sprawling fantasy isn't me. Picked it up browsing the book shop in my home town, was drawn to both the cover (picrel) and the name of the book which held untold steampunk possibility.

Haven't read anything in a while. I checked out pic related from the library like 2 months ago and keep renewing it. How is it?

why the fuck is this so badly written. It won a bunch of awards and I've heard it's apparently good scifi but holy shit I can't handle it anymore, I got 300 pages in before the prose got to me.

Is this actually good? Will I miss anything but just reading the wikipedia plot and moving on with my life?

>medieval fantasy world
>a couple of dragons, shapeshifters and zombies
>great worldbuilding

What the fuck are fantasy fans? Martin isn't a worldbuilder, His appeal is primarily the complex characters, political drama, and """"deconstruction"""" of the genre.

China Mieville is an actual worldbuilder.

>generic fantasy world #928137
>good world-building

this is why worldbuilding fags need to die, whenever they encounter actual good worldbuilding, they just dismiss it as "pretentious"

A lot of Stephen King novels and I have to add one too:
Cell was complete garbage even if it was more than 10 years ago I still remember being upset about it.

But recently I read Perdido Street Station and since the memory of this is fresher I have to go with this.
It gets top reviews everywhere and is recommended on a lot of /lit/ charts about fantasy.
But its an absolute drag to read through, way too long and the plot just stops giving a fuck.
The characters are horrible and in the end just dissolve like the last few hundred pages didn't happen.

Fantasy/science fiction fag here.

I don't hate Young Adult Literature books but I lost touch with them after, well, I stopped being a young adult.

I fondly remember Harry Potter, Artemis Fowl, Abhorsen, Seventh Tower, and several other YA books. I don't retroactively hate them because I'm "smarter" now or whatever. I reread them every now and then for nostalgia.

Most of the genre fiction I read these days, is, well, for people in my age demographic.

A YA book would probably have to either have Harry Potter levels of hype behind it to get me to check it out (Hunger Games, Twilight, and The Fault in Our Stars aren't nearly as big pop culture phenomenons as Harry Potter) or a really interesting concept behind it (Hunger Games sounds like a boring world compared to the worlds in Mieville's books)

Was way more profound and enjoyable than I expected.

The two after it are spectacular as well

What are the best batshit insane fantasy settings? One of the reasons I've avoided ASOIAF is because it seems to basically be middle earth again, based on the commercials for the TV show.

So I'm reading this because someone on here recommended it because I like PKD. I'm a quarter of the way in and I don't see how this is anything less then slightly less generic fantasy. Should I keep going? I hate stopping books midway.

>hurr durr rape is the worst thing you can do to a person
What the fuck, /lit/? This was such a satisfying work except for this bizarre railing against rape that happens throughout the entire work. Sure, rape is bad, but why is it such a prevalent feature of this work?

Poor guy just wanted to fly again. Fuck you, Isaac.

I'm thinking about getting into this "New Weird Fiction". One of my literature teachers is really into it and he always recommends it to people. Is it worth it? What is so special about this genre? also, general discussion of New Weird fiction.
