How is it even possible to make a living as a novelist if your shit doesn't make it as a bestseller?

Say you get 10% royalty on every copy sold at the wholesale value of 50 cents, and your book sells 10,000 copies (being generous). That's only $5,000. Barely enough for a few months rent. How the fuck do you make a living as an author?

Has there been any good "millennial" fiction yet? That is, dealing with the themes/concerns of people currently in their late teens/early 20s, like working terrible retail/fast food jobs to deal with crushing student debt, while being bombarded with surreal meme nonsense like incels and tumblrkin? Is there an intelligent story about Trump and what he means for the world, that doesn't just become "ORANGE MAN BAD" or "ORANGE MAN GOOD"? Can the novel/short story forms even deal adequately with Now?

I feel you anon. How are you as a person? If you're decent looking and semi extrovert it should be fine. If you're not then you should try to improve yourself. I started seriously lifting in may and got a few compliments on my shape. Felt quite good.
