Does it go much into his youth as an adventurer? Always been curious of his life before he became what he is known for, far more interesting to me.

The only thing that ever interested me about Crowley is that in his youth he was quite the mountaineer and made it to the top of quite a few big peaks as well as made some early and quite admirable attempts on K2 and Kanchenjunga. What little information that is available on it suggests Crowley ended up the scapegoat for anything which went wrong and his mountaineering career was ended when he got the blame for some deaths which by all accounts should have been placed on the ones who were pointing the finger at Crowley. It is difficult to tell from what is available if Crowley actually was a scapegoat or the limited information available just makes it look that way. Picrel, Crowley on K2.

In his youth he was a reasonably famous mountaineer, made early attempts at big peaks like K2 and Kanchenjunga, got pretty close as well. He became a sort of scapegoat in the climbing community, the well known names blamed him and called him reckless even though all the reports from the lesser known names seem to agree he played it safe. On Kanchenjunga near the summit he was apparently the leader of the group that refused to cross an unstable ice field, two of the big names in the group went on ahead alone, failed to reach the summit or even get all that much higher. When they got back they convinced everyone to start down the mountain, at night and in bad weather, Crowley was the main voice of dissent and called it dangerous to descend in such conditions, they went anyway, some porters died and he got all the blame. Everyone agrees on these events, but the big names pointed the finger and he took the blame. Some similar stuff happened on K2 as well. It is pretty interesting, but the information is fairly scattered and a pain to dig up.

I have not looked into writing or mystical shit, never really interested me.

I haven't a clue as too where to start, but I just found out that he was quite the mountaineer in his youth, he summited Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau and made early attempts at summiting both K2 and Kanchenjunga, came pretty close on both as well. Curious to learn more about him, seems a fairly interesting sort. Anyone have know a good biography that does not just fixate on the mysticism?
