I always imagined the First Age as this sort of Heroic quasi-Bronze Age, with the Lord of the Rings taking place in something resembling the early Middle Ages, the times of Charlemagne.

You should also read Tolkien's take on it; The Children of Húrin. It's some good stuff.

Here's my personal take on the LotR reading order;

Start with The Hobbit, then head into Lord of the Rings. If you liked it and want something darker and more grim, move onto The Children of Húrin. If you still want more after that, you can look into reading the Silmarilion.
