>judging a landbased power by the strength of the divided and isolated parts of its navy halfway around the globe
I've read biographies on all the Romanovs and most Rurikids of note, why should I then go and buy some super general all-encompassing work? 95% of the time they bring nothing new to the table, brush past any serious developments with perhaps a shallow remark or two, and leave you unsatisfied and not much wiser than when you started reading. Red Tsar and Potemkin was good, so I have considered it just as a refresher, but I doubt it would delve much into the military might of Russia, its organization or military industries.

When Titans Clashed by Glantz for some serious academic history, Russia's War by Overy, Ivan's War or Beevor for something a bit more pop-his.
