Author Gene Wolfe covers all of the above.

The Book of the New Sun series starting with Shadow & Claw for SF/Fantasy. The entire "sun cycle" series of books he wrote is solid all around. Its set in a vastly distant future where the most advanced level of humanity has left earth already, and what is left behind is a superstitious decaying futuristic dark age society.

Latro in the Mist for Historical Fiction/Fantasy. Its about a Roman mercenary who fought for Xerxes at Thermopylae but received a head wound that makes him forget everything but the most recent 12 hours, but also - he can now see and converse with gods and monsters, and if he touches them they become real to those around him. Currently reading this now, definitely enjoying it.

I could describe more here, but google, amazon, and wiki will give you a better idea of whether you'll like them or not.

I've yet to read the Knight/Wizard series, but I've heard good things and the author is solid so I have faith that he can turn even such a generic idea into something pretty cool.

i was given the first volume of new sun and soldier of the mist. now i can´t really decide on which i should spend my time, which will be pretty limited in the next month.
