OK, I read one of the dialogues of Plato as an anon suggested, this is one about greed, and I think it demonstrates some of my issues. This is the particular excerpt that bothers me:

SOCRATES: Well, how about that profiting, as the opposite of bad, is good?
FRIEND: It’s not always good; take that back for me.
SOCRATES: So you believe, it seems, that some profit is good, and some
is bad.
FRIEND: I do

How did Socrates (Plato) make the jump from "profiting" to "profit"? Obviously profiting would be actions bringing about profit, while profit is just an outcome. Throughout the entire argument this mistake keeps getting repeated. It's not even about whether or not his conclusion is valid, maybe there is some argument to go from profit -> profiting but it's never supplied.

Furthermore, the argument goes like this: "Profit is the opposite of loss, and since loss is bad, profit must be good". This is fine, if we add the qualifier "all other things being equal". That is to say, profit is a net good in a system. Yet surely if an argument was supplied that went from profit -> profiting it would be conceivable that it would bring about net bad things into the system, thus nullifying the entire argument.

All these issues stem for sloppiness, I feel. With more care they could be avoided, and arguments could be made with proper qualifiers.

college freshman majoring in philosophy here, I'm enrolled in a japanese course as a minor and the amount of workload is absolutely ridiculous. They gave us 2 weeks to learn hiragana and katakana from scratch, that includes not only being able to read them but also know how to write them (there's a specific pattern for each letter that you have to memorize). In the same time you also have to learn the grammar (which is fairly simple desu) and vocabulary. You're expected to read hiragana and katana fluently and then they hit you with fucking kanji.
Needless to say I gave up after those two weeks because it took so much more time than my major. I only took the course because A) the good courses were already full and B) I was semi-interested in japanese writing. I'm definitely switching to political science or something else next semester.

I've tried to read it twice but didn't make it past 100 pages. The writing just puts me off and sometimes I'm confused by the russian names.

I still cringe everytime I come across this book/movie bc when I was 17 I wrote an essay about kubrick's adaptation for school in english (I'm german) and the teacher found lots of similarities between my writing and that of some online resources so he gave me a 6 (F) lol which is quite embarrassing bc he always thought very highly of me
