So why is this a /lit/ must-read for beginners?

It read like a religious story to me with all the annoying life lessons entwined into it.

This or The Alchemist. Can't decide, they both sucked so bad.

Is any knowledge about Buddhism necessary before reading Siddharta ?

I've seen lots of topics about the book, and it appears in the sticky - well, it's time for me to read it.

Should I prepare somehow, learn something about buddhism and eastern religions or just shut up and read the goddamn book ?

I just finished listening to this, and I enjoyed it quite thoroughly.

Here's a book I recommend. In my opinion it's a pretty good book. Your opinion might be different, but I appreciate your input.

Bought this today at my library for 25 cents because it's next on my reading list and someone annotated and underline on literally every page. I usually just borrow books from the library free but this seemed good but reading with all these annotations will be like someone talking through a whole movie. I don't know if I did the right thing.
