I don't have much respect for Thoreau as a thinker (I'm a hunter and his various writing on hunting made it plain that he was just trying to decide if it was an aesthetic activity or not), but I hate articles like these. It's so blatantly a bid to get him kicked out of the canon/curriculum for political reasons. Even though I thought he was a bit of a fool, Walden is compelling, interesting and influential even if you buy this whole article.

By the way, is anyone else concerned by the authors out-of-hand dismissal of stoicism? What the fuck was that about?
