I know a few of the recs seem more like general history books but they do all include important information on religion in Antiquity. Plus history is inevitably moved and shaped by spiritual factors above all. If you want more general ancient religion outside of the Hellenic word, picrel has great reads on Bronze Age religion.

>The Landscape of History John Lewis Gaddis
He examines how history is studied, written, and taught in an eminently historian-like way. There's intense focus on the proper way to use metaphors to compare/contrast time and space. It's pretty fluffy and aimed at the masses but it's nonetheless a great place to start.

>A Little History of the World by Ernst Gombrich
This book is a timeless classic, even if based on data and historiography considered outdated and overly focused on the West. It's clearly aimed at children but it's written in a way that adults can enjoy. Use it as a starting point for world history rather than scripture.

After that, start with picrel and use the bibliographies to go from there.

STEM is based on a merchant bioculture. I aspire for, at minimum, warrior and priest bioculture.

I'm wondering why is it recommended to start here? Sorry if it's a stupid question, I'm just curious.

So I've finally decided to immerse myself in the history and literature of the ancient near east. I'm looking for books providing a comprehensive history of the region along with anything that offers a trenchant analysis of the societies, cultures and belief systems of the people themselves.

Other than the textbook mentioned in the attached chart, are there any other books you'd consider vital or overlooked when it comes to fostering a knowledge of the period? Are there any books not included in the chart that'd you'd recommend and why?

Absolutely based thread OP. How are you doing? Any recomendations on understanding the occult/spiritual aspects of Sumerian culture?
