Eh, it cares about you somewhat and there is a connection between you and the animal. As you intimated, it is not a replacement for genuine human interaction or companionship.

My cat has taught me many things about life, love, GOD, responsibility, obligations, and commitments. He has made me happy at times and has been a tremendous pain and burden at others. He is, however, far from being a surrogate child to me.
