Bought this a while back and have read 17 of the stories in it. Lovecraft recycles a lot of his themes and some of his stories are just not scary to a 21th century reader. Haven't gotten to any of the Cthulu focused stories yet, but here are the ones I recommend:

Dagon
The Doom that came to Sarnath
The Nameless City
The Music of Eric Zann
The Lurking Fear
The Rats in the Walls
The Horror at Red Hook

Not to say that the other stories of his I've read are bad, but the ones I've listed were definitely the stand-outs for me.

Get this, it's cherry picked but who reads an authors entire compendium anyway.

You might as well just get some big anthology of Lovecraft's work since it will have a lot of the Cthulhu stuff plus other stories. I have no idea about stories inspired by Lovecraft but that sounds like fanfiction nonsense.

Get the hardcover. The edge of the spine has worn down and is now white. Also paperbacks that are this big are just stupid.

I own a copy as well as Necronomicon best weird tales I prefer the latter.

Or Necronomicon, the hard leather cover. I possess it myself and everyday I must refrain myself from entering a sexual intercourse with it. It looks magnificent and exquisite.

But they could choose different stories, I would call all of them 'his best'

Hello /lit/, I bought this book about 6 days ago and have never been as disappointed in a book as much in my life. With numerous threads about it on /x/ and just the general media hype about it I thought it was going to make me shit bricks. It was the first horror book I have ever bought and I will never pick up another as long as I live. Was I missing something? Spent like $50 on the hardcover to!

I enjoy horror novels, should I read H.P. Lovecraft? Is he difficult to read?

Pretty sure it's a collection of short stories by Lovecraft. Least, my copy (same as picture) is.

Me and my friend were wondering if there are more editions like this one and the Conan the Barbarian Centenary Edition, he has the conan book and i have the lovecraft one and we anted to get more

So /lit/, anyone able to help?
<- I'm interested in buying this, but the fact its edited is throwing me off. How heavily edited is this thing? Would you recomend it?
