ITT: overrated trash

Looking for the adult counterpart to these books. Basically like a dark mystery set in a boarding school, college, hospital, military encampment, etc. Non american preferably. Some psychological suspense is welcome. The MC and his friend's piece together clues to bring justice or some shit under the nose of corrupt officials/teachers. I think these elements are what I liked most about the HP books as a child, not the "LEL WE'RE WIZARDS XD XD XD' and of course childish writing.

In todays post-modern society, there is no way for this to be accomplished.

Well, you can go back in time and try to grow up without inane cartoons or the internet.

So far the closest you can get is meld all those cliches you know from pop culture and smush them together into something with may be unoriginal, but "effective," as in manipulative for the sake of cheap feels. The future of art is kitsh, there's no stopping that. Blame mass production.

How would you fix the plot holes?
