Hey /lit/,

This probably is a bit off topic, but just a quick question. I'm doing my HSC (final year of school in Aus), and I need a creative writing piece for the next exam coming up. The topic is 'Belonging'. Only a short piece, between 500-800 words. Been playing around with ideas for a while, and I think I'm going to write about an old woman looking at all the things in her house and the memories of her dead husband that go with them. Is this 2edgy? I was thinking of writing about a kid dealing with losing a friend in a car crash but then realised that probably 25% of the kids in the state will write about that.

Appreciate any advice or insight

After having read the prequel trilogy some years ago and enjoyed them, I decided to take a stab at the original trilogy about Drizzt Do'urden, by R.A Salvatore. Only a few chapters in, however, I got sick of pretty much every single thing being a blatant ripoff of The Lord Of The Rings. Thusly, I ask /lit/ for recommendations on fantasy books that aren't garbage plagiarisms.
