This book by Ismail Kadare. An Italian colonel goes to Albania in the 1960s to recover the bodies of soldiers lost during WW1, and the remains of one Italian prostitute who fell in the line of duty. Another good one by the same author is the Palace of Dreams, actually my favourite by Kadare, about an Ottoman government agency tasked with investigating dreams for traces of prophecy.

Ismail Kadare is a pretty good writer from Albania who has one the Booker Prize and may well win the Nobel Prize soon if rumors are true. This is my favorite book by him, but unfortunately does not fit Cappy's pre - 1950 criteria. The General of the Dead Army.
