Guys, I recently went back home to my parents place over Christmas and found a Bible lying around in my old room that I forgot about, the translation is the Revised Standard Version. I was wondering how one should go about reading the Bible, I'm not particularly religious and know most of the stories already but I've always found religion in general fascinating and getting to know the holy book properly would be great but I'd want to know how one should approach it. I'd love to see recommendations for both how one should read the Bible from a spiritual view and historical view.

Thanks in advance guys! :D

What are the odds that someone edited this?

How is this book still taken literally? Comin from a Roman Catholic family, people including my family seem extremely confused and for some reason turn super defensive when I cite my opinion on a so called 'God'. being an atheist does not mean I hate religion.... Yes I think when I die that I'm dead, no I don't think I'm going to be categorically recycled based on my decisions in 'this life' nor do I believe in my belated (most commonly fiery) judgment at the hands of a maker who's not only fucked up TWICE now (yes God can not only backspace but move shit to recycle bin to) but a creator who blames his creation? That's like a baker blaming the cake for it being shitty, God should take some responsibility if he does exist, if you don't want to look after ants, don't buy an ant farm, pretty simple God, didn't take me 2 worlds, Why create something with so much potential only to fuck with it? If the world WAS an ant farm, God clearly has his cock in one hand and a magnifying glass in the other, My belief is simple, and relies mostly on unarguable fact, if there is an on, there's an off, if there is a negative there is a positive etc.... As Descartes believes when we die, we go to the same place we were before we were born? Where? Exactly. It's arrogant to think heaven and hell exist or that we are all part of a single eternal being...there are balls of super heated gas trillions upon trillions of miles away that will continue to burn long after the memory of myself or anybody this ever reaches (including there great great grandchildren).... Yet I'm a special wittle snowflake ?.....Why even go for round 2 with the ark? Realistically all THE BIBLE Has ever taught me is THAT PEOPLE WHO TALK TO SNAKES TEND TO HAVE HOMICIDAL CHILDREN :P, this has become a rant but I just don't understand it? Even as a moral guideline most texts are ridiculous ...Majority of religions are simple circle jerks of vanity and control... Jesus is to hitler what the third Reich is to organised religion .....Sounds pretty abstract.. But it's accurate notice how I'm not condemning you to eternal suffering or attacking anybody in the name of 'no God' because you don't believe me?? Whats so scary to some about the total decay of being? You will be dead, thus unaware of death or the concept of life that preceded it... It's like trying to explain the sound of a fart to a deaf person...

Currently reading Numbers. God damn the Israelites were whiny idiots. How many times does God need to slaughter you fuckers for disobeying until you stop??

Bible thread?

I just finished Genesis. I plan on reading the Bible approximately (perhaps entirely) cover-to-cover. I was not exposed to the Bible in my childhood; the amount of sex and violence exceeded my expectations, but so did the quality of the narrative.

Do I really need to read this thing to understand allusion and references in other pieces of literature, or are the stories and ideas in it so well absorbed that it would be a waste of time?
