The End of Mr. Y by Scarlett Thomas; the ends of the pages are black and the embossed writing on the cover has been coated in a weird texture (although the pic doesn't pick that up).

Here you go, sir. It is a rather attractive book.

I think it is part of a triplet; not a series just very loosely connected, and there are 2 other 'black' books with a similar style.
