Hell yeah. Think Jack London working as a fisherman and later going to Alaska to prospect for gold. Think Eugene O’Neill working as a merchant mariner. Kerouac doing the same and later becoming a railroad brakeman.
And then there’s Colin Wilson. He had a so so education up in the Norf but was a voracious reader. After a brief stint in the army he moved down to London and slept in a sleeping bag on Hampstead Heath at night and during the day wrote in the Reading Room of the British Museum. He struck up a friendship with the novelist Angus Wilson (no relation) who worked at the museum and Angus let Colin use his own typewriter and room to type up his first book. Pic related.
