I honestly feel bad for the fat man. ASOIAF was supposed to be his life's work. The first three books were fire. Then it got turned into a pop-culture abomination by a couple of hot shots who only wanted to make money.

Since the Big Twist (R+L=J) and the Big End have both been spoiled by the show, GRRM feels stuck. His great vision is spoiled, stillborn... and has nothing else to do but try to sift through the thousands of tangled and retarded sideplots he's gotten bogged down in. I can see why it's such torture for him to write. He must be losing his mind in that cabin desu. Look how long it's taken him to even start WoW. Then imagine another 2-3 massive tomes after that. He's probably hoping corona-chan will take him so he won't have it hanging over his head anymore. I doubt he can enjoy anything in life at this point, even his precious sportsball games must feel like a painful distraction.

At least Bakker finished his series. It might not be the ending you like, it might not feel resolved enough for a lot of fans, but it's the ending he envisioned all along. And it hits like a speeding cement truck.

A quick thought I had, which has probably been discussed in detail somewhere, is how Jon's death may have some echoes of the weird tale in the bible where the dead rise from their graves when Jesus is killed.

What do you think?

"And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people. When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!”

- Matthew 27 v 50-54

Jon fell to his knees. He found the dagger's hilt and wrenched it free. In the cold night air the wound was smoking. "Ghost," he whispered. Pain washed over him. Stick them with the pointy end. When the third dagger took him between the shoulder blades, he gave a grunt and fell face-first into the snow. He never felt the fourth knife. Only the cold …

- A Dance with Dragons - Jon XIII

There is some parallels in the stories with Jon and Jesus being show to the reader to be a savior figure while the other characters in the story are not all onboard. There are hints in both stories that the savior figure will be brought back in some fashion after their deaths. I don't think GRRM gets the credit he deserves because of that stupid TV show.

Tyrion licked his lips with pleasure, then drained his golden goblet of warm, fresh diarrhea. The hearty brown liquid was thick and soupy, with just enough muddled dingleberries to lend it a pleasant texture. Belching with contentment, Tyrion tossed aside his goblet and proceeded to thrust his hard pink mast into the nearest honey roasted duck.
