I guess Kerouac, mainly with The Dharma Bums put the notion of voluntary poverty as a lifestyle in my head. Before that I never even considered it, the notion didn't even occur to me in all my middle class vidya splendor. I had a mid-teens "muh Buddhism" phase as well, but that kind of withered away while being a happy bum sort of stuck with me. It's also the first book I've read that sort of approaches the sage/rogue paradox and how the two might be combined into one person, which was quite a revelation for my since I had always regarded the two as mutually exclusive.

I still feel grateful/loyal to Kerouac for presenting my naive mind with alternative ways of living.

Essential Kerouac: On The Road, Dharma Bums, Big Sur. In that order. It's chronological, but also in reversed order of greatness. Big Sur is haunting and honest and tender and horrible and beautiful.

I'm not so sure about the others, although I've read Burroughs' Junky, Queer and Naked Lunch. Enjoyed all of them. Junky the most I think since it's a rather straight forward sort of confessional of having a junk habit in the 50's, which I find interesting. I've yet too try more of Burroughs' stranger sci-fi like works though.

I've read Ginsberg's Howl once and while I didn't really dislike it it didn't really do anything for me either. I do feel a antipathy towards Ginsberg while I'm rather fond of Kerouac and Burroughs, so that may be it.
