Why are writers like this? I can empathize with a stupid person but when a stupid person is opinionated they're like the bugchasers of thought. Stricken with the consequence of their own poor decisions and trying to infect others with their own short sightedness. I've read so much stupid shit that was thousands of pages, grueling, useless shit, carcinogenic bile that some midwit poured his heart out for, and here I am reading when i could be fucking, or eating, or working, or playing guitar. How do you justify the tie you've spent thinking and not acting, /lit/?

Any of you have experience with listening to audiobooks while lifting? Does it work? Should i only listen to lighter stuff?

Pretension is pretentious. If you call someone else's work pretentious, you're assuming that you are qualified to make that assessment. You very well may be, but in order to justify your denigrating usage of "pretentious," you would also denigrate yourself by virtue of having the pretense of sufficient talent or knowledge to make that assessment. There being no sound argument for pretense being anything but a universal negative, the concept behind the word's usage makes no sense -- you cheapen another's work and cheapen yourself in the process. Why? There's an irony to it as well. Being a word with such a rich and nuanced meaning, people often use it as a generic, vague descriptor on its own. But, if we assume the above argument, it becomes pretty clear that the label of "pretentious" can be reduced to a complex implementation of a simple concept: basic dislike. Given the implicit self-label which by nature accompanies any application of the word, it follows that when you call someone else pretentious, you are literally just projecting. Unironic projection, not the meme projection. You are doing nothing other than saying that you dislike their work because you dislike yourself.

tl;dr calling something pretentious is just trying to include someone else into your microcosm of loathing
