It's an obvious result from being spoiled, no pressure. It happens in every single organism. Organisms bounce between extremes during times of rapid change like when introduced to a new island or a new situation, like food abundance. The deer island meme is not about population but adaption, the deer were adapted to vast ranges. To adapt to the new situation they would have had to experiment and that period would not have looked pretty even if they made it through.
