Given all this Wolfe discussion I'm going to repost my Solar Cycle theory.

Firstly, the secret of the imhumi Jahli told nettle was a blindingly obvious red herring. Secondly, the sea goddess on Blue is another Scylla, revealed in the final pages of Return to the Whorl. Given the time it took her to grow to her current size on Urth, we can presume she has been on Blue for a while.

I propose The Whorl was not the first ship to arrive at the Blue/Green system. Another ship dispatched from Urth carrying the young sea goddess Scylla must have arrived long before The Whorl for her to grow to her current size. This ship arrived shortly before The Neighbours went extinct (they were familiar with sea goddess Scylla). This ship also carried the inhumi (from Urth) which were introduced to wipe out The Neighbours (perhaps in preparation for the colonisation). This would explain how Imhumi were within The Whorl from launch (there wre also passengers). The secret of the inhumi is that they are not native to green, but instead to Urth. The Alzabo is similar to the Inhumi, superficially (imitating human voices and seemingly their souls). Perhaps just as the human Scylla grew to monster-Scylla, so did normal imhunmi grow into the Alzabo?

However, I still don't see how this secret would spell their doom, which was really emphasised.

Agree I don't really like it.
