You're thinking existentialists. Continentalism is what you dislike.
They were philosophers who did math. You have to develop an abstract system in philosophy then play around w it in math. All of those (besides von neumann idk) were extreme platonists at the time they made their discoveries.

I think an easy good book which gives narrative is Logicomix. It covers the early 20th century and it's easily digestible. He is somewhat competent in math but the conclusion he gives is terrible. Read picrel, godel says it was a particular epistemological impossibility.
