We go back to poetry, duh. Why don't you fuckers realize this, that it all returns to poetry in the end?

Poetry is simply more difficult than prose at its highest heights. Faulkner, no mediocre writer, said that "All writers are failed poets."

We have such a narrow, constrained view of what poetry can do these days. The English Romantics really were bad for the medium in that regard. Epic poetry is a superior form of storytelling to prose novels. Poetry used for storytelling, at the hands of a skilled poet and tale-teller, can't be beat, not even by the best novel.

Who is your favorite character in the Iliad?

For me, it's Diomedes.

Shame the current version is so bad looking. Pushed me to buy Fagles instead (not the only reason, I do prefer how he translates my favourite lines)

I'm reading The Iliad for the first time, translated by Lattimore. I'm enjoying it, but what's surprising me is how much difficulty I'm having processing what I'm reading. I'm not at all new to reading, but I am new to the Greeks and most poetry in general so that may be contributing. Is it normal to find it pretty dense and unapproachable? I was thinking to switching to the Samuel Butler (or any other) prose translation, and then coming back to Lattimore once I'm more familiar with the text, has anyone here had more success trying that before?

Why does this shit resonate so much? Has it permeated our culture to that degree, or is it truly one of the greatest things ever written?

I have the University Of Chicago Press edition of The Iliad, I'm not crazy about the cover art but as for the actual quality/durability of the book I'm satisfied with it. Fairly inexpensive as well.

Holy shit that's a badass cover.

I've gotta stick with this fucking thing. Don't even get me started on the shitty American translation of a British translation of an ancient Greek epic sold in Britain.

Is Lattimore the go-to English translation of Homer if I want an accurate read representative of the original?
