Are The Cantos actually worth reading despite the difficulty? Are they the height of modernist poetry as many people have said?

How do I get into this absolute madman?

I've only read In The Station of the Metro, and I'm guessing the Cantos is a bad place to start, (like kicking off with Ulysses for Joyce).

So what's the best entry point and what do I need to be familiar with before tackling his more difficult shit (other poets, classic works, languages etc.)?
