Anyone who's travelled abroad or within their own country which has some regional differences should be able to dispel these notions, people are and see themselves as distinct from each other in a national sense that translates to individual communication, e.g. you won't just be talking to a cosmopolitan fellow individual in every city in the world, they'll see you as alien even if you're say anglophone and travelling to another anglophone country.
The difference is especially pronounced if you travel in a foreign countryside. I've travelled extensively in my yuropean nations countryside and the countryside of other nations, and I'm clearly a countryman and fellow national in the former case despite being an urbanite, and a foreigner in the latter.
