can anyone recommend me a book which takes the form of a buzzfeed article or watch mojo video written by a middle tier academic talking wildly outside their area of expertise? Bonus points if it revolves around the idea that individual responsiblity trumps literally everything.

Critias was one of Socrate's students, who hated democracy just as he did.
Not only that, but the terror squads that alongside the Spartan forces maintained the dictatorship were the "Socratified Youth" (Rich and young aristocrats who where fans of Sparta ), that Aristophanes describes in his plays.

On top of that, the most famous of Socrates's disciples, Plato, made Critias an honorable character in his dialogues. And what Critias wished to do by force, Plato attempts to create with myths and indoctrination.

If Socrates wanted to stand against the thirty's regime, he should have fled the city, like many moderates and even oligarchs did , or spoken up against the tyrants, like Theramenes, who paid with his life for doing so.

Found the problem. Just read what you want to read. Don't listen to these idiot philistines who screech "MUH GREEKS, MUH GREEKS." If you are capable of understanding Kant, you can do so without appreciating his "subtle" (not actually) references to Aristotle, because these contribute nothing to the strictly logical framework of e.g. Critique of Pure Reason. Most of these "start with the Greeks" chowderheads couldn't ingest Kant if he were literally throat-fucking them.
