What does the title actually refer to? Is it a reference to Byron's Stanzas to the Po?

Or is it literally just referring to a sunset, where "Blood Meridian, or The Evening Redness in the West" is the equivalent to "Moby Dick, or The Whale".

Finished this last night. Incredible book and I recommend everyone read it. What do you guys think happened to the man at the end. I was surprised to see so many people assume the judge raped him. It seems really out of character.

Finished this a couple of days ago and I cannot stop thinking about that ending. Taken at face value it's a real grim and unpleasant ending, but there is clearly a lot of subtext packed into that final chapter that makes you wonder what really happened. Notably the disappearance of the girl. It feels irrelevant if you subscribe to the idea that the judge killed the kid, which in turn makes you wonder if it really was the kid they found in the jakes.

What's /lit/'s take on the ending, and the book in general?

Judge Holden is war incarnate. What are some other books

A quick rundown on the Judge
>He cannot be killed, he does not sleep, he seems to be able to kill anyone, those he does not kill are utilised to kill, e.g. he weaponizes the caged idiot by turning him into a sniffer dog, he seems to appropriate the weapons, attire, and gear of anyone that comes across him (except for the Kid's pistol), he fends off Yumas with a cannon when nearly everyone else is killed during an Indian attack, he scalps an Indian child he at first played with, he rapes, and at the end of the novel he dances and plays the fiddle like a demonic spirit sent to torment man before man even existed
