There are very few moments in a man's existence when he experiences so much ludicrous distress, or meets with so little charitable commiseration, as when he is in pursuit of his own hat.

/lit/, my professor just told me the author is dead.

Authorial intent is impossible to find in a text and we shouldn't even bother to try. Literary criticism doesn't even play with authorial intent at all. Seems like a very odd concept to me, to 100% disregard the authors intent when it's becoming easier to know what authors did intend these days because of the greater ease in speaking to audiences authors have today.

Is my prof based or biased? Do we not look at authorial intent at all when being critical of literature? Genuinely confused.

What would happen if one were to read every book on this thread?
Would his mind be, literally, blown?

Who's your favorite author?
What's your favorite book?
What's the worst book you've ever read?
What's the last book you've read?

Why do contemporary authors fill their books with arcane bullshit?

All these allusions to dialectics, thermodynamics, Platonism, etc. just seems masturbatory. Or maybe I'm just being uncouth. I don't know.

Question; in a bit where one character explains what the ruler's seal does I'd also like to add as an aside a reference to the money used in the setting (sovereigns) which of the following is the best alternative;

"What is this?"
"What you have there is the Grand Seal of the Realm, it signifies its bearer and all documents signed by it as Sovereign."

>It's also where our money takes its name from.
>It's also the namesake of our money
>You may have heard of it, it's what gave name to our money

Also, am I being a tosser for capitalising the above?

I'm sure we've all hard DFW was supposedly a massive man whore? Not sure of the validity of that claim, but after that, I started seeing Orin as this repository for some of DFW's personality flaws that he might have seen in himself. With a guy that stresses the importance of "feeling" in literature, I thought it could be possible, IDK.

Well, I think rap is superior to literature because when you rap you have to improvise, and it takes rhyming to a new level.

The best "poets" that /lit/ worship couldn't make it against the lamest rapper in a basic rap battle.

Everybody can rhyme, but only a few can improvise and rhyme in real time.

I always thought it was about the all-consuming nature of the American Dream, so to speak.

I mean, at the end of the movie Eli was willing to renounce the defining characteristic of his personality, his faith, in order to secure the deal with Daniel, which I thought was very telling.

And Daniel himself disowned H.W. because he was entering the oil industry independently of Daniel, making him his competitor.

Also there was the grandson of that old fart (I can't remember his name, the one who woke up Daniel after he killed his "brother") who moved off his land and went to Hollywood -another person renouncing their old life for a new, modern American one.

Kids are actually pretty smart.

Either way, they've gotta learn somehow.
Make them think.
Never dumb down.

Just picked it up at a bookshop down the street used, same copy as OP's post. All the names and locale are a bit intimidating, so i've put it a little further down on my reading list. Still hope to get to it sometime soon though, if it's good enough for Vonnegut it's good enough for me.

Hey /lit/, does it matter big time if something you write or really want to write turns out to have a similar film adaptation? Similar in the most basic way possible...do you give up on the project altogether? Even if it's really important to you?

It's very visual. This is great! Is there an inside story to the poem, or a backstory of sort which explains or connects the emotions of the people to the destruction? The Sword in sheath line came out of no where.

Do you think any books that have been published in the last 10 years are capable of becoming "classics?"
