People in general hate having to read and will come up with any number of excuses to justify not doing it. When it comes to the college-educated, who think they should be the smartest person in the room, their excuses simply allow them to maintain their intellectual or moral superiority.

It's not anything new, just the fashionable way to flavor it. Only a very small minority of people (even among the 'intelligentsia') actually read anything but NYT bestsellers and pop psychology in their own time.
