Good evening /lit/,

I'm looking at getting into Continental Philosophy, starting this summer.

Question: should I learn German and/or French before I even try to do this?

I obviously got to stick out my head out of this thick fog and read Heidegger Being and Time to understand /lit/. Rumors says that it's hard to understand. Then which is the best introduction so I can get a deeper understanding of the ideas.

What do I need to know to read Being and Time?
Kant's Prolegomena is on my reading list as well, should I read that before Heidegger?

My face when this board is overrun with greedy reductionism and science worship.

1. "World" is used as an ontical concept, and signifies the totality of things which can be present-at-hand within the world. 2. "World" functions as an ontological term, and signifies the Being of those things we have just mentioned. And indeed 'world' can become a term for any realm which encompasses a multiplicity of entities: for instance, when one talks of the 'world' of a mathematician, 'world' signifies the realm of possible objects of mathematics. 3. "World" can be understood in another ontical sense -- not, however, as those entities which Dasein essentially is not and which can be encountered within-the-world, but rather as the wherein a factical Dasein as such can be said to 'live'. "World" has here a pre-ontological existential signification. Here again there are different possibilities: "world" may stand for the 'public' we-world, or one's 'own' closest (domestic) environment. 4. Finally, "world" designates the ontologico-existential concept of worldhood. Worldhood itself may have as its modes whatever structural wholes any special 'worlds' may have at the time; but it embraces in itself the a priori character of worldhood in general.

Any related concepts elsewhere?

It shows pointedly how Heller is deeply influenced by Heidegger qua public intellectual and philosopher. Heller did a lot of work on late phenomenology and hermeneutics when he was a student at Colombia, and it shows up in a lot of his work, especially Catch-22 and especially in this instance.
Major Major is himself an enigmatic figure not unlike Heidegger, but (Major Major) thoroughly and paradoxically fulfills his role as a figure defined by a Henry-Fonda-ness to the point that he finds himself apologizing merely for Being.
Major Major's enigmatic position among his men (analogous to H.'s role in academia and among contemporary politicos) combined with his role as reluctant leader are fully in line with both Heidegger's philosophy and biography.
