Re-reading Grapes of Wrath. When I was younger I thought it was a total snore, but this time I'm actually liking it a lot. Maybe I've grown to be more boring.

Maybe I have a heart of stone, but my feels were limited. It was probably because I was so irritated at the way the dialogue rolled of my tongue phonetically (someptin.) Was actually kinda like "thank god that shit is over." When I picked up "The Grapes of Wrath" the dialogue bothered me at first, but it wasn't long before I didn't care. Steinbeck's descriptive social commentary swept me up and I loved it. I had far more feels from that book which piqued on every second chapter (the descriptive context ones.) The Grapes of Wrath IMO IS the Great American Novel hands down. Maybe I should revisit OMAM, but I don't think it will compare... Fuck it, I'm rereading Grapes

can /lit/ tell me everything I need to know about this book. I read through the first 10 chapters and I'm not really digging it. I'm supposed to finish it by Monday.

Hey /lit/ , I have a project on this poorly aged novel.

I need to make a poster representing the "Ghost of Tom Joad" (Yes, like the Bruce Springsteen song)

So far, I'm thinking I'll do a path to a tombstone as the main focus, and the following as symbols around it:
-Tombstone somehow poorly made to represent their lack of wealth
-Shovel lying slightly behind grave to represent the bad past, behind him now
-Withering flowers to represent family (?)
-Some way to represent grandparents, casy, and stillborn child. (graves and burials representing their deaths)
-Some way to represent the red scare (red weapons?)
-Fire-and-brimstone sermons against sin (chapter 23)

Would any of my fellow /lit/eraries like to help me out? More ideas for symbols? Ideas to cut out?

Thank you all

tl;dr - Grapes of wrath picture project, wat do?

So I have read Of Mice and Men, The Moon is Down, The Pearl and Cannery Road and I picked up Cup of God, Tortilla Flat and East of Eden from the book store. What else should I read from Steinbeck? What are his best in your opinion?

Sup /lit/.

I need a few good critical interpretations of Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath that discuss the socialist and/or communist elements of the novel. Preferably one that looks at the novel from the perspective of a Marxist, noting Steinbeck's criticism of capitalism.

I've searched my local library but what they have mostly contains postmodern interpretations of other elements in the book.

So yeah, any ideas?

Re-read this in late '08, mostly because of the recession.

This book and the formula of get a family and make all of the bad stuff that happened during this era happen to this one family reminds me of Upton Sinclair's The Jungle. But I enjoyed it sooo much more in The Grapes of Wrath. Why?
