Pynchon is a most exquisite writer, with excellent form and execution. What I enjoy most littered throughout his oeuvre are the flubs, wiles, jests and general horseploay. His literary masterpieces are full to the brim of these things. Every novel analogous to those Marxian (Grouch, mind) boxes which you open and, surprise, surprise! You've now received a black eye from a spring loaded boxing glove and you fall back doubled over not with pain but with laughter. Wow, such genius. Every bit as provocative as modern American celebrities. You get to stroking your beard and you think what could he possibly do next, this most subtle of comedians, Thomas Pynchon. So you get back to reading and it is as though you receive an electric shock of a nonlethal but otherwise frightening sort and, by Jove, you've been had again by that old Master of pinching, Pynchon, the pincher of readers.

"Did that Pynch?" he says, laughing like Disney's most memorable canine. Behold as he dons a set of joke glasses twitching the moustache left and right, bouncing the eyebrows, "I really do get ahead of myself." Out with the mirror like stately plump Buck Mulligan. "Mmm, yes!" stroking his aged lips sensually. And wouldn't you know it? You're on rear end again, in absolutely religious tears, a caustic Gnostic experience, laughing so hard you begin to wheeze, as he snaps his suspenders, exits stage right, and appears again hauling a huge golden gong.

>greatest american author
LOL

Realize he just doesn't live up to the other authors discussed here. In fact, he's never discussed. These threads are always the same. One guy whining and blaming everyone's complaints on their personality
>underage
>pol
and never discussing Roth and his middlebrow garbage novels.

If you can't articulate why it's NOT BAD let alone good, what the fuck are you doing?

>How could I do a field study on this to make this character more believable?
You'd weave in factoids about traveling. You've read Fight Club? There are examples of exactly that. The show Burn Notice does the same gag, constantly dropping professional tips / quasi-professional tricks.

If you're not going to do the research on your own (like actually doing what your character will do re travel) then you can slog through websites and blogs that offer the kinds of lifehacks that would establish this guy as an expert.

Or you could just make it up. At least half the stuff Palahniuk uses to establish his characters' credibility is nonsense. It still works due to the combination of confidence and strangeness of the explanations...

Egyptian scholars know better than that and I am not the only person to point out the historical and cultural parallels between ancient Egypt and africa.

For one thing, most archaeologists, in their zeal to reclaim classical history for the Greeks and Romans, work too narrowly, privileging Greece and Rome's empire building over local civilizations like that of the Mediterranean. One of the finest examples of this was the French scholar Joanne Manaire's classic The Waning of the Roman Empire.

Thomas Pynchon is from one of the few 300 or so families that are always ordained into high ranking positions within society; it should be of little surprise that he was accepted into Cornell, and was jettisoned into a position at Boeing where he was privy to the technical doings of the Military Industrial Complex.
Tom began to run with the Ordo Templi Orientis based out of Pasadena, from which the infamous Jack Parsons gained notoriety and gnosis from. Tom was never initiated, but his rapacious thirst for knowledge was enough to discover some of the secrets of the Secret Doctrine of the plenitude of Lilith cults from around the world.
Tom used his newly discovered methods to receive cosmic assistance on his writing... if you ask Tom yourself he will say he's confounded over how he managed to write Gravity's Rainbow. Of course, over time, the journey on the left hand path comes to an ultimatum, a sacrifice so to speak, and if refused a multitude of Agents are activated for the sole purpose of afflicting one's life with the utmost misery... escaping to Mexico is often a good idea at this point, but in the end, they'll always find the one they want to find, and they'll make whoever do whatever, under threat of complete and utter spiritual annihilation. It goes way high up, man.
Poor Tom can only tinker away at his pages, infecting little dollops of Truth here and there... but, of course, it could all be a Red Herring, some neurolingual programming designed to work on the nervous system... all great fun to do.
