The use and abuse of art by Jacques Barzun is the most comprehensive work on the downfall of Western culture, art/sciences ever written and it's less than 200 pages!
For info about the counter-culture movement itself try "slow days fast company" by Eve Babitz

This is probably the most relevant thread I've ever posted this book in. Use and Abuse of Art is the only cultural criticism I've read that actually says something interesting and unique instead of endless platitudes and observations that a 12 year old would struggle to find interesting.
